I’m HdE, a freelance comic book letterer.

I’ve been lettering in this capacity since 2010, and my work has appeared in a number of titles already, including the monthly series ‘Legend Of Oz: The Wicked West’, and the vampires vs Werewolves (and werebears) series ‘Ursa Minor’ for Big Dog Ink.

Other credits include lettering on the anthology title ‘Break The Walls: Stories Inspired By The Music Of The Pixies’, the Eagle Award nominated UK small press title ‘Lou Scannon’, and back up strips that appeared in IDW’s hardcover edition of the fan favourite Transformers mini-series ‘Last Stand Of The Wreckers.’

If you have any queries about what I do, or if you’d like me to work on your book,  feel free to email me at hde2009@hotmail.co.uk  – PLEASE don’t contact me with job offers here on my blog.

    • Hi Brooke,

Feel free to contact me at the email address above with the full details of the book, e.g. publisher, deadline, etc. and I’ll get back to you.

  1. What do you use for lettering? I would like to letter, any free downloadable lettering programs/software?/How would I letter in Adobe, if possible.

    • Hi Ethan,

I’m lettering exclusively in Adobe Illustrator. To my knowledge, the only comparable freeware is a program called InkScape – although I have no idea how that presently measures up to Illustrator’s feature set. To be honest, there are no other free programs that I can think of that will enable you to render an even passable looking lettering job (people may recommend something to you called ComicLife, but it’s absolutely dreadful and not fit for purpose.)

How to letter in Illustrator is really a question I can’t answer in the time I have available, unfortunately. But you can find a decent explanation in ‘How To Letter Comics The Comicraft Way’ or ‘The DC Comics Guide To Coloring And Lettering’. Both of these will give you the basics. But be prepared to spend a long, long time mastering the craft. All of us in this game are still learning!

  2. Sorry, I don’t know if my last post . I i’d like to hire you for a seven page sampler, how can i contact you and how much do you usually charge a page?

    • Hi CJ. I currently charge a rate of $15.00 per page. My contact email can be fud on my ‘about’ page. I hope that’s helpful!
